Welcome to Operation Comfort:
Our Mission: Operation Comfort provides support to our service members who have been wounded in Afghanistan or Iraq and are receiving treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). Our Goal is for our wounded military, who have given so much for our country and the world, to see in tangible ways that we appreciate their sacrifices and that we want to help them recover as quickly and completely as possible.
Operation Comfort has served the wounded military personnel at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, since 2004. We have remolded eleven waiting rooms for the families of our wounded service members to relax in while in the hospital with their loved ones. We have also provided a Tranquility room for the burn staff members so that they can have a quiet break during their work day. We try to bring some of the comforts of home to our recovering heroes --- Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines --- who have been seriously injured in the military campaigns: Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Operation Comfort believes there are several different levels to recovery and sports plays an important part in the recovery process. We have developed a comprehensive sports program for our wounded heroes. In our cycling program we have five different cycles that they can ride; hand cycles, trikes, recumbents, road bikes and mountain bikes. Last summer we sponsored a softball team and this year we are sponsoring a softball league, which is six teams totaling eighty three players and our teams play each Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Park. We have a sled hockey team that has been adopted by the San Antonio Rampage Hockey Team and we are now known as the San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team and we practice at the Ice & Golf Center at Northwoods. Other sports we participate in are amputee surfing, river rafting, and adaptive Nordic and alpine skiing. We also have a program called AutoMotivation where the guys can get out of the barracks and go and work on cars at the Lonesome Dove Land and Cattle Company,a ranch outside San Antonio. The owner has been very kind to us by extending the invitation and the space in which the guys can work on cars.
We also offer family financial assistance to our wounded service members and their families. We work closely with the case workers at BAMC to identify those who are in need of assistance.
We have upcoming events in various stages that are intended to encourage our wounded service personnel to prepare for the next productive stage of their lives as well as provide a diversion while they undergo rehab. Check out our Calendar for all of our latest events. You can also read through our programs to get a better idea of what Operation Comfort is doing.
