Events & Outings
Operation Comfort is committed to excellence in the community. It is our responsibility to provide leadership and give back to the community of soldiers who have sacrificed so much for our country.
Over the past year, Operation Comfort participated in many successful events from dedication of rooms for the wounded soldiers at BAMC to helping wounded servicemen participate in the Endeavor Games in Edmond, Oklahoma. We are excited to list the following events that Operation Comfort will be participating in over the upcoming year as a support for wounded soldier and marine participation.

- TOUR DE CURE BIKE RIDE – AUSTIN – MAY 19 - 20, 2007
- On May 19-20, 2007 Operation Comfort and San Antonio Parks and Recreation will be sponsoring wounded Soldiers and Marines in the “Tour de Cure” an approximately 90 mile bike ride from San Antonio to Austin. Our amputee Soldiers and Marines will be riding on new handcycles that have been generously to Operation Comfort. This event is an opportunity for Soldiers and Marines to again push themselves to the limit without the hospital overseeing their effort. This is rehab at its best because they are also helping raise money for a great cause, the fight against Diabetes. Our riders have named their team the “Freedom Fighters” and they will be wearing team jerseys. We are also proud of the amputees who are not yet ready for a distance trip but they are coming out to support their fellow Soldiers and Marines. For more information visit www.diabetes.org/tour

- On October 20-21, 2007 Operation Comfort and San Antonio Parks and Recreation will be sponsoring wounded Soldiers and Marines in the MS150 “Bike to the Beach” a 150 mile bike ride from San Antonio to Corpus Christi. Our amputee Soldiers and Marines will be riding on new handcycles that have been generously to Operation Comfort. This event is an opportunity for Soldiers and Marines to again push themselves to the limit without the hospital overseeing their effort. This is rehab at its best because their goal is 150 miles in two days. The added benefit is that while they are rehabbing, they are also helping raise money for a great cause, the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. Our riders have named their team the “Freedom Fighters” and they will be wearing team jerseys. We are also proud of the amputees who are not yet ready for a distance trip but they are coming out to support their fellow Soldiers and Marines.
- “OPERATION COMFORT SPECIAL DINNERS”
- Hal Koster past owner of Fran O’Brien’s Steak House in the Capitol Hilton Hotel in downtown Washington DC began offering free steak dinners to our wounded Soldiers and Marines who are recovering at Walter Reed in October 2003 and although he no longer owns the restaurant, he still helps provide this service.
- Operation Comfort has followed in Hal Kosters’s footsteps and offers the same for our wounded Soldiers and Marines who are recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Mr. David Straus, who is a highly decorated WWII Marine and owner of the Barn Door Restaurant hosts the dinners at the Barn Door Restaurant every Monday. David was very happy to accommodate our wounded and has graciously offered to subsidize our program “Operation Comfort Special Dinners” by reducing the price to 50%. We estimate the dinners to cost approximately $25,000 for a year. Our first dinner was held Feb 13, 2006. If you would like to make a donation to help us continue to provide this service, please click on Contributions and use our PayPal secure service. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.
- SLED ICE HOCKEY
- Operation Comfort’s wounded Soldiers and Marines ice hockey team have been adopted by our own San Antonio Rampage Ice Hockey Team. The Rampage has been instrumental in providing support and instruction to the Soldiers and Marines participating in ice hockey. The wounded Soldiers and Marines have learned how to play ice hockey on sleds and are constantly recruiting new Soldiers and Marines to do the same. The Ice Center at Northwoods has partnered with Operation Comfort and makes this activity possible as they graciously donate the ice every Monday for practice.
